Mia

Mia

Beresfords Cara Mia THD aka Mia was our very first Vizsla. She came to us in May 2001. Her name, in Italian, literally means; "My Heart" or more accurately, "My Love". Mia received her Canine Good Citizenship Award in 2002, Delta Pet Partner certification in 2003, and Reading Education Assistance Dog (READ) certification in 2004.

In July 2011, Mia became one of the first dogs in the country to earn the AKC Therapy Dog Title(THD).

Mia has worked as a Therapy Dog at Yale New Haven Hospital and Glenwood Rehabilitation Center. In 2005 Mia pioneered the READ program at Bethany Community School, one of the first of its kind in a Connecticut grade school. Mia has been honored by the Bethany PTO and Bethany Lions Club for her community service. She has appeared in newspaper articles and on television.

In 2006 Mia was nominated for an ACE Award (Award of Canine Excellence) from the American Kennel Club and she was the recipient of an Honorable Mention from Delta Society as a honoree for a 2006 "Beyond Limits Award".

Mia is now retired as a Therapy Dog, but still sees many of her "kids" while jogging with Mary Ellen in Bethany.

(Right) Mia dressed up for Halloween. The shirt was a practical joke because Mia had gained some weight and ballooned up to 60 lbs. Since the picture was taken, she has begun running with Mary Ellen every morning and has slimmed down to a more appropriate 45 lbs.
